The Witcher-författaren kräver CD Projekt på 150 miljoner

Författaren Andrzej Sapkowski skapade The Witcher-världen och skrev böckerna om Geralt of Rivia, vilka CD Projekt Red sedan köpte rättigheterna till och gjorde spel av. Redan första spelet blev en framgång, men det var med The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings det tog fart på allvar och i och med The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt blev det en av de största rollspelsserierna i världen.

Sapkowski fick förhållandevis lite betalt (knappt 100 000 kronor), och han kontaktade advokater för att leta efter ett kryphål i avtalet. Därefter slog han fast att avtalet bara gällde för det första spelet och stämde CD Projekt Red på 60 miljoner zloty (132 miljoner kronor), vilket enligt uppgift ska motsvara 5-15% av vinsten CD Projekt Red haft.

Nu har dock CD Projekt Red bemött detta via sin hemsida och skriver där att Sapkowski inte ska vänta sig några pengar, men att de vill försöka lösa detta och behålla en god relation:

"Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski expects payment of additional royalties beyond what had been contractually agreed upon between himself and the Company. The contents of the notice are attached to this report.

In the Company's opinion the demands expressed in the notice are groundless with regard to their merit as well as the stipulated amount. The Company had legitimately and legally acquired copyright to Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski's work, i.a. insofar as is required for its use in games developed by the Company. All liabilities payable by the Company in association therewith have been properly discharged.

It is the Company's will to maintain good relations with authors of works which have inspired CD Projekt Red's own creations. Consequently, the Board will go to great lengths to ensure amicable resolution of this dispute; however, any such resolution must be respectful of previously expressed intents of both parties, as well as existing contracts."

Sapkowskis advokatfirma har postat ett svar på detta, och visar att de inte har några planer på att ge upp och tycks tro att de kan vinna samt att de även vill ha en snygg lösning på detta snarare än ett öppet bråk:

"The brief analysis presented above in no way exhausts the pool of arguments and evidence in our possession. We are fully aware of the fact that the Author's claim expressed herein is not a typical request, and that demanding payment of dozens of millions Polish Zlotys is not an everyday occurrence. We nevertheless wish to assure you that the case has been under preparation for a fairly long time, and that the Author is fully aware of the scenarios which may unfold depending on your actions. Even more importantly, both we and the Author are determined and prepared to see this matter through to a fully successful conclusion.

Even so, as is true in every case, and particularly true in this instance, considering the specific relationship between you and Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski, the Author's nature and character, and also your own standing and business interests, we are prepared to settle the matter in an amicable - and more importantly - expeditious and quiet manner."
