Hotel Dusk: Room 215

Skrivet av: Strife   2007-08-03

This is the second game from the developers of Another Code: Two Memories. The game reminds of its' predecessor. It uses the same concept - Lots of dialogs, innovative puzzles, exciting storyline, drawn characters and pre-rendered picture's of the area you're in. The game system is held 90 degrees from normal and as you may know the DS (Dual Screen) has two screens. Holding it this way makes it feel like you're holding a book. On the left screen you have a full 3D environment seen from first person perspective, on the right is the map of the area. In the middle on the right screen is the icon that symbolizes your character. To move around simply touch (on the touch screen) at the direction you want to move.

The story is about a former cop named Kyle Hyde from New York. He is betrayed by his partner Bradley during an investigation. Bradley disappears as it seems that he was a part of the crime they were investigating. Kyle leaves his work and gets a new one as a salesman. 3 years later in December 27, 1979 he gets a new job from his boss Ed. He was to make his way to a place called Hotel Dusk. There he finds surprising news of the past. It seems that this hotel in the middle of nowhere has some scary history. He meets people that have different intentions going to this old and dusty hotel in the middle of nowhere. But most important of all he finds clues leading to Bradley.

The problems and puzzles are mostly about finding and using items to get through the game. The puzzles are can be very easy and some harder. Some of them are only simple gestures like taping on the door knob to open the door or taping the door to knock and others are a little more difficult like moving matches to form three triangles or using tools to fix things
Sometimes you get engaged into conversations with the hotels employers and the guests. Then you have to use smooth talk to get the information you want from that person without making them suspicious.

The game is divided in chapters. Each chapter happens at a certain time. To get the clock moving you have to trigger certain events in the story. For example enter a certain room or do something you're supposed to do. The game runs smoothly until the end where it gets a bit more difficult. You're almost always making progress which doesn't make you bored.
The most important thing in an adventure game is the story. Hotel Dusk passes that with an A+. It's so intense and you will always find something going on.

There are some functions which can help you on the way. If you open your notebook you can write a memo in case you have something you don't want to forget. You also have a summary of the previous chapters. The game lasts for about 15 hours before the ending credits. It's well spent time.
