Vi snackar med id Software

Chefredaktör Hegevall träffade id Software under årets Games Convention 08 och har skrivit ned intervjun på engelska, för att fånga allt på bästa sätt.

Todd Hollenshead, id Software: What's wrong with theese people? Fucking crap sandwiches that are'nt even real sandwiches. Just bad meat, lettuce and some sort of bread laid out like we're suppose to take the time to go there and collect all that crap - and then build our own sandwich. Hey you... Tim, we recognise this guy don't we?

Petter: Yes I met you in Barcelona last time. We stayed at that fancy hotel called The Arts in the middle of the city, and spent an awful lot of time at the pool.

Todd Hollenshead, id Software: "Yes, thats right. Thats was great trip. We showed of Doom 3, right?"

Petter: Sure did.

Tim Willits, id Software: Thats was great. I remember. So. What do you wanna talk about today?

Petter: Can I choose freely?

Hollenshead: Haha, of course you can. We can talk about anything. Global warming, the situation in Russia, the upcoming election at home. Just anything.

Petter: Good stuff. How about Rage?, I wanna talk about Rage.

Hollenshead: Go!

Tim Willits: Let's do that. Let's go. The first thing I wanna start of by saying is that this is NOT some sort of crazy racing game wich some reporters wrote after our E3-demo. This is fast paced action, as usual. But in a new setting. id Software-styled balls-out-action. And some racing.

Hollenshead: Yeah, it's a game that we are extremely proud of already, and are looking forward to get back to as soon as get back home. We wanna get back to the grinder... haha.

Petter: Doom 3 was closed quarters horror-styled slow-ass gameplay with a huge amount of shock-moments. Is this what we are gonna see in Rage too? Or can I expect more bad angry guys in every firefight, less horror and more pure carnage?

Willits: Yes. Absolutely. This is no survival horror-game at all. This is action, fast paced. We are gonna throw loads of enemys at you at the same time and equip you with some great badass-weapons with huge amount of firepower.

Petter: And were does the racing-parts fit inside of that?

Hollenshead: For Rage, we have built an completely open-ended game world. A huge one. And to get around you need transportation. Cars, trucks, buggys... stuff that you either steal or find, or buy.

Petter: Big open world, big open outdoor enviroment. Is that the main focus of Carmacks new graphics engine?

Hollenshead: Absolutely. idTech 5 is soon to be completely finished and that engine is amazing.

Petter: So. Making the Doom 3-engine almost only capable at rendering small enviroments and very few enemys at a time... do you consider that a mistake today looking at how extremely succesful Epic has been with it's Unreal Engine 3.0-tech?

Hollenshead: Yes and no. What we did in Doom 3 was amazing. And no other game does that as good as Doom 3 did it, not even today. But the tech that we used was extremely focused on one thing wich made it less appealing to other studios ready to buy a finished, and allrounded engine.

Petter: How about inviting me to come back to Dallas and play the game?

Willits: First we will have to work some more to have something that you actually could play. Give us some more months and then ask us, and we can for sure figure something out.

Petter: The Happing, I am Legend, Invasion, Blindness and then Fuel, Borderlands and Rage. Post-apocalyptic, dystopia-stuff is extremely hot right now... why do you think that is the case?

Hollenshead: Were id Software goes, everyone follows.

Petter: Hahaha!

Holleshead: No, but I am being serious. Thats the way it works, most of the time.

Petter: But the climate has been like this for years now, I guess it's a product of the social and political state that we are in. The shockwaves after 9/11 and all that. The apocalyps.

Hollenshead: Maybe. But look at Valve. We made a publishing-deal with EA long before they did the same thing. Everyone just follows our lead.

Willits: Hahahahaha!

Petter: Thanks guys.
